2009 Eastern Cape Mini-Conference of the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa

The 2009 Institute of Waste Management – Eastern Cape’s Mini-Conference will be hosted from Wednesday, 26 to Friday, 28 August 2009 at the Regent Hotel on the East London Esplanade. The theme for the conference is Waste Management and Climate Change - The Link.

Conference Details & Venue

The 2009 Institute of Waste Management – Eastern Cape’s Mini-Conference will be hosted from Wednesday, 26 to Friday, 28 August 2009 at the Regent Hotel on the East London Esplanade. The theme for the conference is Waste Management and Climate Change - The Link.

Representatives from Industries, as well as Local and District Municipalities, will provide input into the current methods used in the management of waste, and ways in which measures can be improved upon.

Waste management generates carbon dioxide and methane which are both greenhouse gases. Everyday waste contains readily biodegradable carbon based organic matter such as kitchen waste, garden waste, and paper, and slowly biodegradable organic materials such as lignin (wood-like material). Some products such as plastics, contain carbon derived from the fossil fuels which are used as a feedstock (oil). The treatment and disposal of these wastes has a direct influence on the emissions of these greenhouse gases.

When we manage the treatment and disposal of our wastes we are also managing the method by which the carbon will be released back into the environment: similarly the changing climate impacts on the way waste will need to be stored, treated and disposed of, and will also alter the risks associated with waste (e.g. pests, diseases).

An exhibition will form part of the conference programme. Opportunities exist for companies to utilise this opportunity to promote their products and/or services. All exhibition space will be linked directly to the conference area and delegates will be encouraged to visit the stands during registration and tea/lunch breaks. 20 internal exhibition spaces are available - book now to avoid disappointment!

Poster Presentations

Poster Presentations will be displayed in the exhibition area as well.
