IMESA is affiliated to the International Federation of Municipal Engineers (IFME), and also held the position of secretary of the federation, at one stage. Through this partnership, IFME held their executive committee meeting during our conference in Durban, last year. The by-product of this collaboration was that we saw a number of international speakers at the 2007 conference. We feel this reinforced our position as an international player in this field.

IFME, in conjunction with the Institute of Public Works Engineers Australia will be hosting their triennial conference in Melbourne Australia in September 2009 and the call for papers has been issued. South African engineers are encouraged, wherever possible, to submit abstracts of their papers, to be delivered at this conference. The flyers have been articulated and all interested parties can contact the IMESA stall for further information. The theme for the conference is ‘Global Challenges, Local Solutions: Delivering for the next Generation.’ A topic very relevant to us in South Africa that speaks to the core of the challenges we face.
